Organic Chemistry II

Original art by Nicholas C. DeMello, Ph.D.

In Organic Chemistry II we will explore the naming and reactivity of the more complicated (and more interesting!) organic functional groups. The chemistry of the carbonyl group will be explored in great detail, as well as the function and reactivity of biologically important molecules like carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, and proteins.

Organic chemistry is an important subject of study for all students of chemistry, but the pre-professional (pre-med, pre-dent, pre-chiropractic, and pre-pharmacy) student will also benefit greatly from this course.

Don't believe me, then just read this student testimonial:

Dr. G,

Greetings from a former organic student - how's it going? I've been meaning to e-mail all quarter, but am only getting around to it now. I had almost forgotten how busy things can be when you're a full-time student. As you may recall, I moved to Seattle a couple of months ago to attend the School of Pharmacy at University of Washington. I really like Seattle, although I haven't been able to explore nearly as much as I would like (you know, school and all). I just got done taking a biochemistry final which, for the record, was awful. Ironically enough, biochemistry is the class I've done the best in and enjoyed the most this quarter. Oh well, it's over, right? I have a couple more finals to study for, but I'm procrastinating. The program here at UW is great, but I'm still thinking about going into research. I'm not certain how that's going to work yet, but it's on my mind.

I hope the semester is going well for you at Central. Do you have lots of students who are incredibly enthusiastic about organic chemistry? I have to tell you, I did enjoy the class, and even better, I learned a lot. In fact, my organic knowledge allowed me to test out of a required pharmacy class here at UW. So, thanks!

I've kept in touch with Shelagh and it sounds like she's enjoying North Dakota State. She too is in the midst of finals, but I think she's happy in Fargo.

Anyway, that's all the news I have. Have a great holiday and enjoy your time off from teaching!
