  6. Oftentimes, the molar mass, or molecular weight, of an unknown compound can be determined experimentally without knowledge of the molecular formula of the compound. If the molar mass is known, then possible molecular formulas for the unknown can be generated. A useful method for generating possible molecular formulas from molar mass data is the Rule of Thirteen.
