Where a proton or group of protons resonates with respect to TMS can give information about the local environment of that proton or group of protons. Depending upon what other atoms are nearby will determine the relative position of the peak in the NMR spectrum. Correlation charts can help us identify the various functional groups present in a molecule.

To see how the correlation chart can be used, refer to the spectrum on the previous page. The peak at 2.44 ppm corresponds to the CH3 group adjacent to the carbonyl, and the peak at 3.73 ppm corresponds to the CH3 group attached to oxygen.
