Dissolve 0.1 g of unknown in 10 mL of water. Add bromine water drop by drop until the bromine color is no longer discharged.
Discharging of the bromine color or formation of a white precipitate is a positive test.
Mercaptans react readily.
HBr is generated, but will not be observed since the reagent is aqueous.
